Chimp Shows in Vegas: On Finding Animals in the Archives In-Person

Susan Nance, Ph.D., will explain her current research on the history of animal shows and displays in Las Vegas and the difficult work of documenting lives of historical animals through archival collections. Nance is currently working on a new project, Animals of the Las Vegas Strip, a study of the nature and scope of the wild and exotic animal trade in the United States grounded in the history of one American city.

Nance is a Professor of History at University of Guelph, affiliated faculty with the Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare, lead editor of the scholarly journal Animal History, and author of numerous books, including the forthcoming Animals in America: A History in Documents and Ranching and the American West: A History in Documents.

The William R. Eadington Fellowship program is sponsored by the University Libraries Special Collections and Archives and funds scholarly research into our collections on gaming and Las Vegas.
