Writing Smarter: Ethical and Effective Use of AI in the Research Writing Process In-Person

This workshop will provide guidance on effectively and ethically utilizing AI tools to enhance the research writing process.

Key topics will include adhering to professors' guidelines for AI use, recognizing and addressing biases, limitations, and data security risks associated with AI, and applying AI tools for brainstorming, drafting, and revising academic work.

Learning outcomes

Understand Ethical AI Usage: Students will be able to identify ethical considerations and institutional guidelines for AI use in academic work, including when and how to use AI tools in accordance with professors' expectations.
Recognize AI Limitations and Security Concerns: Students will develop an awareness of AI biases, limitations, and data security risks, enabling them to make informed decisions when using AI tools.
Apply AI Tools to the Writing Process: Students will learn how to effectively generate and critically evaluate prompts for AI tools, analyze AI-generated responses, and practice using these tools to support key stages of the writing process, such as brainstorming ideas, organizing drafts, and refining revisions, while maintaining their unique voice and critical thinking skills.

Students will be required to complete a WebCampus course module that addresses key topics related to AI, including ethical considerations, adherence to professors' expectations, data security risks, inherent biases and limitations of AI technologies, and foundational concepts of AI literacy. Participants are required to complete the Generative AI Modules in the UNLV Libraries WebCampus course. Enroll in the course to take the modules.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own devices, but Libraries laptops will also be available for use.
