Why Didn't My Students Buy the Textbook? How Some UNLV Faculty Members are Using Open Educational Resources

Why Didn't My Students Buy the Textbook? How Some UNLV Faculty Members are Using Open Educational Resources Online

Did You Know...

  • The high cost of some course materials can impede students’ academic success.
  • The cost of textbooks is rising at a rate of 4 times inflation.
  • 7 out of 10 students don’t purchase a required textbook during their academic career because of cost.
  • 60% of students have delayed purchasing textbooks until they’ve received their financial aid.

One way to bring textbook costs down is the use of Open Educational Resources (OERs). Join the UNLV OER Task Force (a partnership of Office of Information Technology, the Office of Online Education, the Faculty Center, the University Libraries, and the UNLV Bookstore), Tanya Spilovoy, Director, Open Policy Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) Cooperative for Educational Technologies, and featured UNLV Faculty for this important virtual panel on OERs.

By the end of the panel, participants will be able to:

  • Define OER and why they are important (hint: it’s money)
  • Examine textbook affordability initiatives, including OER, and their use in higher education institutions throughout the region
  • Discuss adoption of OER materials and their impact on textbook affordability
  • Discuss use by faculty at UNLV and best practices for material selection
  • Identify UNLV resources to assist faculty in implementation of OERs in their courses
